Chalabi says double agent's tip let Saddam flee first U.S. strike
By Sharon Behn, THE WASHINGTON TIMES
Iraqi political figure Ahmed Chalabi said yesterday that a double agent had tipped off the U.S. administration about the whereabouts of Saddam Hussein, then told him of the imminent U.S. "decapitation" strike, allowing the Iraqi dictator to escape.
"We believe that Saddam was aware of the decapitation strike against him. And we also believe that he took measures to make it appear he was somewhere; in other words, there was evidence he was in control of the operation," Mr. Chalabi told reporters and editors at a luncheon at The Washington Times.
Asked whether a double agent had given away the U.S. military game plan to eliminate Saddam during the strike March 19, which marked the beginning of the Iraq war, Mr. Chalabi answered, "This is a complicated situation, but the short answer is yes."

WHY THEY HATE US (LIBERALS, THAT IS)
Point-blank, they hate our freedom. The conservatives that is. And they are projecting onto the terrorists. I was reading the VOA article disputing Bush's famous view that Islamicists hate us because of our freedoms, and reflecting how ironic it was that the very folks who are claiming to protect our freedoms from them are actually taking them away. Of course, I've never been naive enough to believe it was anything other than another lie or propaganda, hiding the results of their economic exploitation and cultural imperialism, but it occurs to me that it is also what they want to believe and an externalized expression of their own fears.
Under the Bush regime, from day one we have not been not free to have our votes counted, we do not have freedom of information, and under the various "Patriot" bills have lost virtually all civil liberties. But it goes back farther than that, past the Clinton presidency, all the way back to the sixties. Yes, I'm referring to the "infamous culture wars". Some people felt free enough to experiment with mind-altering drugs, sex, music and alternative religious philosophies and they (the conservatives) have never gotten over it. Conservatives nowadays are against all personal freedoms, including the right to speak your own lanaguage if its not English, practice your own religion if its not Christianity, and make your own decisions, if its against THEIR morality.
They should be ashamed to invoke freedom as their rationale, and they should not get away with it.

US PLANS WMD-DELIVERY GRENADE
Fuss over Army plan for gas grenade
Patent says it can deliver chemical, biological agents
Tom Abate, Chronicle Staff Writer Monday, June 9, 2003
A new rifle-launched gas grenade, invented by the U.S. Army ostensibly for nonlethal crowd control, has created a stir because the patent filed on the technology claims that it can deliver chemical and biological agents, two payloads forbidden by international treaty and U.S. law. LINK

WMD HUNT IS OVER, NOTHING FOUND
U.S. Hunt for Iraqi Banned Weapons Slows
Mon Jun 9, 5:40 PM ET, By DAFNA LINZER, Associated Press Writer
BAGHDAD, Iraq - U.S. military units assigned to track down Iraqi weapons of mass destruction have run out of places to look and are getting time off or being assigned to other duties, even as pressure mounts on President Bush to explain why no banned arms have been found....
..."It doesn't appear there are any more targets at this time," said Lt. Col. Keith Harrington, whose team has been cut by more than 30 percent.

IMAGE IS EVERYTHING, ISN'T IT?
Government will launch news network to counter 'anti-American' image
...By the end of this year, Pattiz, the chairman of radio giant Westwood One and a member of the government’s Broadcasting Board of Governors, which runs the Voice of America radio broadcast, hopes to launch the Middle East Television Network, a U.S.-based, 24-hour satellite news and entertainment channel that will try to snatch viewers away from Qatar-based newscaster al Jazeera and a number of state-run news media outlets in the region. LINK
QUESTION: Didn't we try this before? And didn't it NOT work? When will this government realize that substance counts and not just image? Well, it's like the tax cuts I guess. Just because they don't work is no reason to stop trying them. Ya gotta have FAITH!

BUSH USES TERRORISM TO DISMANTLE CIVIL SERVICE
Overhaul of Federal Workforce Sought
By Christopher Lee, Washington Post Staff Writer, Sunday, June 8, 2003; Page A01
The Bush administration, citing national security concerns, is pressing Congress to enact the biggest overhaul of the federal civil service system in a quarter-century.
In the name of reshaping the federal bureaucracy to better counter global terrorism, administration officials are seeking the authority to rewrite long-standing pay and personnel rules governing 746,000 civilian employees at the Department of Defense. The powers would be similar to those won by the administration last year in a contentious battle over the formation of the Department of Homeland Security, which has about 180,000 employees. LINK

BALLOONING THE EVIDENCE
Saddam's trucks were for balloons, not germs
Peter Beaumont and Antony Barnett
Sunday June 8, 2003, The Observer
Tony Blair faces a fresh crisis over Iraq's alleged weapons of mass destruction, as evidence emerges that two vehicles that he has repeatedly claimed to be Iraqi mobile biological warfare production units are nothing of the sort.
The intelligence agency MI6, British defence officers and technical experts from the Porton Down microbiological research establishment have been ordered to conduct an urgent review of the mobile facilities, following US analysis which casts serious doubt on whether they really are germ labs.
The British review comes amid widespread doubts expressed by scientists on both sides of the Atlantic that the trucks could have been used to make biological weapons.
Instead The Observer has established that it is increasingly likely that the units were designed to be used for hydrogen production to fill artillery balloons, part of a system originally sold to Saddam by Britain in 1987.
